“I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands. I spread out my hands to You; my soul longs for You like a thirsty land.” Psalm 143:5–6.
It had been a long, dry summer, and as I sat along the banks of the lake that morning, I couldn’t help but notice them. Their flying skills were breathtaking as they darted close to the ground then soared effortlessly into the blue sky. Their daring near misses didn’t seem to bother them. They just changed directions at breakneck speeds while I craned my neck to follow.
They were swallows, of course—northern rough-winged and bank swallows—working their way through the gnats that had hatched a few hours after a good rainstorm. But to me, it just looked like
pure joy!
It wasn’t long before a Bible text came to mind. Pulling out my iPhone, I looked for my Bible app and scrolled through the different versions until I found one with an audio stream. I tapped the screen and a man’s voice began reading the comforting words of Jesus recorded in Matthew 6. “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
I felt my muscles relax as I watched the birds flying—careless in the care of God. I wondered how many birds God fed every day?
“And why are you anxious about clothing?” the recorded voice continued. “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”
I wondered how many flowers blossomed each day. I wondered how many of them lived their life span without being seen by human eyes? But You see each one, O God! You count each petal—and
each leaf.
“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.”
Any anxiety I brought with me to the lake that day had melted away. I longed for God as I sat in His presence, and as I acknowledged Him, my spirit soared!
