“‘I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken it and performed it,’ says the Lord.” Ezekiel 37:14
First, a heart attack, followed by a triple by-pass, topped off with two minor strokes; I knew there was nothing more I could do for the Lord. I hadn’t taken proper care of my physical body and I was paying the price with these health issues. So, I was waiting for the next health problem to take my life. I was simply biding my time at death’s door.
During my wait, I was having one of my many endless nights of little sleep when a thought crept across my mind. It would be a blessing to our community to have a thrift store.
“Thanks, Lord, that’s a wonderful idea,” I said aloud. Then my mind buzzed with questions. What’s the best location, and who would be willing to manage it? I knew I wouldn’t be able to take on such a task because of my poor health; and what did I know about finding a good location? Plus I didn’t have any qualifications to manage a thrift store.
Overwhelming thoughts of clothing racks, shelves, and how to display the merchandise reached out to threaten my very sanity! The thoughts keep coming through the night, and with the dilemma was constantly before me. So I decided to take it to the church board, and with that, the issue was settled!
Arriving at the church board meeting, anxious for this situation to be handled by people who were used to leadership, I lay the idea of a community thrift store before them. And to my surprise, they were all for it.
Then came the question, “Of course, you’d be willing to do it, right?”
“Uh, who, me? I can’t,” I stammered. “But maybe I could assist someone that could lead the project.”
No one spoke. They just stared at me!
“Okay, I’ll try,” I said, with a voice barely above a whisper.
We never realize our potential till the Lord causes us to face His leadings. It’s so easy to say, “I can’t, I’m not qualified,” and it’s difficult to step out in faith, leaning on His mighty arm.
What a blessing I would have missed if I had said no. God knows where He wants to lead us—if we are willing to follow.
