Martyrs and More.

Babylon and blood have already been spoken about in Revelation: “They have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them blood to drink. For it is their just due” (16:6). More shocking: “I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus” (17:6). For ages, God’s spokespersons have been persecuted, both in Old Testament and New Testament times, and throughout the period of the apostate church.
Stephen spoke forcefully to the council of Jewish leaders, saying, “Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers” (Acts 7:52). Jesus warned of end-time persecution: “They will lay their hands on you and persecute you” (Luke 21:12). And Luke spoke of a time in the New Testament church when “a great persecution arose against the church” (Acts 8:1).
During the Middle Ages, often called the Dark Ages, the powerful apostate church persecuted God’s people. Untold numbers suffered and died for their faith in Scripture over human traditions. Hebrews speaks of these men and women through the ages: “Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth” (Hebrews 11:35–38).
Is God going to do something about this? Yes, for this is the message of justice in Revelation 18. Jeremiah’s prophecy on this ancient enemy has an end-time fulfillment: “‘I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all the evil they have done in Zion in your sight,’ says the LORD” (Jeremiah 51:24). Someday the blood of the prophets and saints will be avenged. The enemy will be destroyed, and we will go home.
Lord, You are the righteous judge over all the earth. Thank you that, soon, You will make all things right.
