Tribulation
By Jenni Poling October 14
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Flying over the Pacific from South Korea to Los Angeles, we began to notice some interruptions in the smoothness of an otherwise peaceful flight. Soon, a long announcement came over the loudspeaker in Korean, followed by an equally lengthy announcement in Japanese. Not understanding either language, we waited patiently for an explanation in English, but what we heard was, “Please fasten your seatbelts, we are having…trouble.” Knowing that it was likely just a little turbulence, we were amused, but still felt a little bit nervous. Nothing like being left “hanging!”
Some of us tackle this uncertain life blithely, presuming we will get along fine. We like the status quo. Then, when things don’t go the way we would have liked, we get really upset, bitter, or angry. Maybe we think that if we ignore trouble, it will go away. It doesn’t – not in this life. Sadly, there really is no vaccine that can buffer us from trouble—and if there was, like a virus, trouble would surely mutate.
So, what’s the cure? Become a worrywart, always thinking the worst will happen? No, that doesn’t solve anything. Worry changes nothing, except to allow our minds to travel in a detrimental direction. Jesus said, “Which of you, by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” Matthew 6:27.
In this life, we can expect, and even anticipate trouble. However, even with our eyes open to reality, we can still have a sense of peace and joy. Why? Because in the end, the battle has been won and the outcome is a positive one. Jesus is our victorious Savior and He has accomplished what needed to be done so we could have life. He is with us, so we need not walk alone. Soon our troubles will be over, never to return. So be of good cheer!
