The Scent of the Journey
By Eric Durant October 15
“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.”
1 John 4:11–12
Sometimes the simplest things in life are the most special. Those moments that go unnoticed at the time, but resonate when they are gone. Like my two dear friends.
One appreciated every morning like it was a brand new gift. She flipped and darted back and forth, excited at the waking of every dawn. The sight of my dreary morning eyes brought her infinite joy. The other would wait at the window until I came home, later that day. He savored every moment—even the ones I didn’t have time for.
They were specialists of aggravation. Relentless in their quest for love. Thieves of the moment. Stealing the time and the attention that they deserved. They wanted more than one could possibly give and they were happy with far less.
Life is a breeze that passes on a summer day, and there are many different fragrances it might contain. The scent of a rose. The whiff of honeysuckle on the wind. The pungent odor of the cedar tree, and sometimes, the scent of loss. God gives us moments with Him and moments with each other to cherish, yet we are sometimes distracted by the scent of life. Distracted by the destination. Obsessed with defining our mission and cause. At risk of leaving our spiritual growth and our relationships behind.
God sends us the music of the birds to season the breeze. To add a flavor and joy that only a journeyer can know. He sends the rain to blossom the dry ground and create a flora of color and beauty for the sojourner to behold.
Be inspired. Spend time appreciating the journey, and God will lead you to the correct destination. Appreciate everyone, everything, and every moment—bitter or sweet—because God has a purpose for the flavor, the scent, the experience.
Sometimes the simplest things in life are the most special. They are God-sent. We should stop on many occasions to appreciate them, learn from them, and cherish them before they are gone like a summer’s breeze. A breeze by which we are changed with each passing.
I miss my four-legged children and cling to the lessons they taught me. Our character is the key that unlocks our eventual destination. We find it along the journey’s trail.
“If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” Psalm 139:9–10.
