Humility and Self-Confidence
A person's self-confidence in a state of humility is unshakable, because the heart of the humble is not divided against itself. And note, O reader, that the division of the heart and the wavering of the will stem from the conflict, contradiction, and clash of lusts. The division of the heart is a state of fear, and fear is the fruit and firstborn of pride, because the proud person is full of fears, driven by passions not wisdom, and led by false honour, not the divine commandment. Pride may plant extraordinary abilities stemming from the quest for people's praise, and the pursuit of false heroism is enough to plant temporary abilities in a person that fade away and plant hesitation in him.
Consequently, the humble person works without seeking praise, and finds pleasure in working for God, unconcerned with what he has achieved, what he has accomplished, or what people will say about him. He does not work for the reward but because he loves the work, that is, for the sake of the work itself, and therefore his self-confidence is unshaken because he does not fear criticism nor dreads the loss of gains, and thus he can focus his attention on what he does and what he undertakes, and gains confidence from his work, not from people's estimations.
