Service and Our Return to God
Service is a remedy for every soul striving towards the Kingdom by the power and grace of the Trinity. Serving the needy is an imitation of the Lord Himself.
Service, like fasting and prayer, purifies the heart from excessive self-concern; because visiting the sick and caring for the elderly makes us see the end of our lives and reduces our reliance on physical strength. Every soul should choose the type of service that suits it, but sometimes we must accept a service that does not suit us so that we discover the depth of our love and peace; because avoiding service may have motives and concerns contrary to the Lord's commandments themselves.
We should not ask for a specific service because we desire it, but we should pray and seek the counsel of the Lord Jesus who always serves us; because if we enter a service through prayer and our union with the Lord Jesus, we learn much about ourselves and our purity increases.
Reading books and studying the Holy Scriptures are necessary for all, and those who have received the gift of teaching must not excuse themselves from serving others, especially the sick; the Lord Jesus taught and worked, but he who teaches and does not work should examine himself lest the serpent of pride be sleeping in his heart without him knowing.
The living icon of Christ is in the humans we serve, and it is much better than icons; because it has the promise of eternal life, and the glory of the Lord Himself is not in paint, wood, and colours, but in man, the image and likeness of God.
