The Green Eye.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
I was fourteen years old. School was just starting, and I wanted to try out for a place on the football team. But we lived four miles out of town, where we turned onto a dirt road and drove another mile through a redwood forest to our house.
My dad was a lumberjack, and was unemployed in the winter, so I was not surprised when he said, “You’ll practice ball after school and miss your bus ride home; and we can’t afford to drive to town and back every night to get you.”
“I’ll walk home, Dad. It will make my legs stronger,” I answered.
“Under the redwoods, on foggy nights when there’s no moon, you won’t be able to see the dirt road,” he replied. But I wouldn’t give up.
“Then I’ll use my feet to feel the ruts in the road if I have to,” I answered.
Finally, he relented. “Okay, you’ve got a deal. Good luck!”
The night did come when I had to use my foot to follow the ruts in the road to know where it turned. And that night, when I saw the green eye glowing just ahead of me, I knew it had to be something alive, because there was no light that could be reflected.
Yes! I was afraid it was hungry, and that I looked like supper. So I prayed, “Lord it's four miles back to town, or four hundred yards ahead to my supper and a bed. Please protect me, because I’m going through!”
As I went forward, the road turned, and the green eye was 30 feet off to my left, and closer to the ground. “Thank you, Lord,” I whispered, and then I thought, If I don’t go back and see what that was, I’ll never know.
I discovered a beautiful glow worm that God had designed with its own night light to help it find its way in the darkness of the woods! Along its way, the glow worm goes through metamorphosis, and becomes a creature that can fly.
God has given us our own night light, too. He is called Jesus, and He helps us find our way through the darkness of the world. Along our way, we go through sanctification, and we become creatures with eternal life.
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12.
