Title: Arise and Shine
Introduction
Beloved, today let's turn to the book of Isaiah, chapter 60, verses 1 and 2. The world around us can often feel shrouded in darkness. There’s conflict, division, and a sense of hopelessness that can weigh heavy on our hearts. But today, our passage from Isaiah offers a beacon of light, a call to rise above the darkness and embrace the hope that God offers.
The bible reads from Isaiah 60:1-2
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you”.
Arise and Shine (v. 1)
The first verse thunders with a command: "Arise, shine; for your light has come!" It's a wake-up call, an invitation to step out of the shadows and into the brilliance of God's presence. The word "arise" suggests a slumbering state, a passive acceptance of the surrounding darkness. But God says, "No more!" It's time to rise above our circumstances, to throw off apathy and despair.
"Shine" is even more powerful. It speaks of radiating God's light outward. We are not meant to hoard this light for ourselves; we are called to be beacons in the darkness, reflecting God's love and truth to the world around us.
The Glory of the Lord (v. 1)
And why are we called to shine? Because "the glory of the Lord is risen upon you." This is not something we can manufacture on our own. It's the very presence of God that illuminates us, that empowers us to be lights in the world. When we surrender to God's will, when we live according to His teachings, His glory shines through us.
Darkness Shall Cover (v. 2)
The verse continues with a stark contrast: "For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people." This darkness represents the spiritual blindness, the lack of faith and hope that permeates the world. It's a reminder that the need for God's light has never been greater.
But the Lord Will Arise (v. 2)
But amidst the darkness, there is a promise: "But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you." Even when the world seems consumed by darkness, God will not abandon us. He will rise above it all, and His glory will be evident in the lives of those who follow Him.
Application
Beloved, how will you respond to this call? Will you rise and shine? Will you allow God's light to illuminate you from within? Here are some ways we can live this passage out:
• Renew your relationship with God: Spend time in prayer, studying scripture, and letting His light fill you.
• Share your faith: Don't be afraid to share the hope of Jesus Christ with those around you, through your words and actions.
• Live a life that reflects God's character: Be a beacon of love, kindness, and compassion in a world that is perishing in sin.
Conclusion
The world may be shrouded in darkness, but we don't have to succumb to it. We are called to be light-bearers, to rise above the shadows and share the hope of Christ. Let us go forth from this place, determined to shine brightly for Him, knowing that He will be with us every step of the way.
