THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
To Find, Know,
and Do the Will of God

By Karen-Lyn Owen, October 24th

“Now may the God of peace ... make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight ....” Hebrews 13:20–21

Stepping out of the 3ABN Worship Center, the cool evening air soothed my troubled heart. I had just heard the last sermon of our Homecoming Camp Meeting, and I felt convicted to put my Heavenly Father’s plan for me ahead of my own. I wanted to be sensitive to His voice, and I wanted to be willing to go and do whatever He wanted. Each morning, my devotional time ended with, “Lord, Thy will not mine. Let me be a blessing to someone today.”

Not long after I made that commitment to put His plans first, I decided to clean my house. My life had been busy recently with Mom in and out of the hospital, as well as my other obligations; so the conditions in my house reflected my neglect. I began picking up things, and then decided to wash laundry, and mop the floors.

In the midst of my cleaning spree, the phone rang. “Could you come over now?” the caller asked. I thought the request would be dealt with quickly, but it didn’t work out that way, so after a long day, I returned home and collapsed in my rocking chair, planning to start again early the next day.

Again, I asked my Heavenly Father to use me wherever I was needed, then went about my work. And then the phone rang, and there was another need. As I hung up I said, “Lord, I need to get my house clean,” but dutifully went and did the errand.

This continued for some time. I’d ask for the Lord’s will each day, and then someone would call with a need, interrupting my schedule. God was asking me to be His instrument when people needed someone the most, but I didn’t recognize that my willingness was based on my convenience.

As the calls came, I complained. It seems I didn’t really mean whenever God needed me. He showed me that I wanted to serve Him, but that I was choosing when I wanted to do it!

I don’t always recognize how important it is to stop what I’m doing and place my attention on someone else’s needs. And when I place my plans above God’s, the people who need me lose the blessing—and so do I.

Sometimes I feel stretched to the limit; I get tired and weary trying to meet all the demands in my life. However, after the Lord reminded me of my request one morning, I now want a heart that says, “Yes Lord, send me!”

Things will turn out better—because I’ll do it God’s way, and not mine.
