A small congregation in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, made a big impact by canceling $3.3 million in medical debt for local residents—using just $15,048 in donations.
Members of Trinity Moravian Church partnered with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to buy and forgive the overdue bills of more than 3,300 families in Forsyth and Davidson Counties. The church held a symbolic “debt-burning” ceremony to mark the forgiveness.
Inspired by the biblical concept of Jubilee, the project turned a few thousand dollars into life-changing relief for struggling families. Pastor John Jackman said, “This is what grace looks like—unearned, undeserved, freely given.”
Founded in 1457, the Moravian Church is one of the world’s oldest Protestant denominations, known for its emphasis on unity, humility, and service. Trinity Moravian’s project reflects that legacy, showing how faith communities can address modern challenges in practical ways.
