An arduous struggle awaits everyone who wants to master the evil inclinations that try to control them. The preparation work is individual. We are not saved in groups. The purity and devotion of one will not make up for the lack of these qualities in another. While all nations must stand trial before God, He will examine each individual's case as rigidly and thoroughly as if there were no other being on earth. Each one must be tested and found without spot, wrinkle, or any such thing.

This work has been going on for many years. Soon - no one knows when - the living will be judged. In the august presence of God our lives must be reviewed. At this time more than at any other time it is fitting that every soul heed the Lord's admonition: “Be alert! Watch out! For you do not know when that time will come” (Mark 13:33, NIV). “If you do not stay awake, when you least expect it I will fall on you like a thief” (Rev. 3:3, NIV).
When the work of the investigative trial is completed, everyone's fate for life or death will also be decided. The time of probation will end shortly before the Lord appears in the clouds of heaven. Looking back to that time, Christ declares in the Revelation: “He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is impure, let him be impure still; He who is just, let him practice justice even more, and he who is holy, let him sanctify himself even more. I am coming quickly, and my reward is with me, to reward each one according to his work” (Rev. 22:11-12).

Before the flood, after Noah had entered the ark, God shut him up in it, leaving out the wicked; But for seven days the people, not knowing that their fate was decided, continued in their indifferent search for pleasures and mocked the warnings of the judgment that threatened them. "So will also be the coming of the Son of man" (Matt. 24:39). The Great Controversy, chap. 29, pp. 480-481.
