What does it mean "to wrestle with God"? What is the Bible story behind this phrase, and how can it be interpreted?

It means to struggle in your prayers and persevere. Especially when you do not see it answered at the moment.

This is the Bible story behind the phrase. Jacob while being alone worried about meeting his brother who might killed him and his family has a all night wrestling match with a man who he didn't know was God.

Genesis 32 (NKJV)²⁴ Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.²⁵ Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him.²⁶ And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaks." But he said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me!"²⁷ So He said to him, "What is your name?" He said, "Jacob."²⁸ And He said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed."²⁹ Then Jacob asked, saying, "Tell me Your name, I pray." And He said, "Why is it that you ask about My name?" And He blessed him there.³⁰ And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."³¹ Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip.³² Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He touched the socket of Jacob's hip in the muscle that shrank.

This the story I take it as a true event we can learn a number of things .

1) God is never too far from our worries , when we think we are as it were alone, God is there.

2) At times we have to take hold of God's promises in our prayers and not let go.

3) Struggling in our prayers is not a rejection but a open invitation to hold on even more and not to loose hope when everything seems lost.

4) It is not God being defeated but giving in to answer his prayer .

But yes Jacob wrestle with God and won only due to the fact God let him. As a parent given in to their child after a whole much of nagging, and pleading to have a their favorite toy.

Hosea 12:3-5 BSB 3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel, and in his vigor he wrestled with God. 4 Yes, he struggled with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought His favor; he found Him at Bethel and spoke with Him there — 5 the LORD is the God of Hosts— the LORD is His name of renown.

5) But God never the less showed him that he could of easily kill him when he just touched him and hurt him.

Gen 32:25 ASV And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him.
