Halloween may seem like a harmless night of candy and costumes, but for those who follow Jesus Christ, it is not something to take part in. The Bible teaches that believers should stay away from the things of darkness. Halloween celebrates fear, death, and evil spirits, which are the opposite of the light of Christ. Jesus said in John 8:12 (NLT), “I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you will not have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” Those who belong to Him are called to walk in that light, not to take part in darkness.

The roots of Halloween go back to pagan festivals that honored the dead and spirits. People wore costumes and lit fires to protect themselves from evil. Later, the night became known as All Hallows Eve, the evening before All Saints Day on November 1st. That day was meant to remember faithful Christians who had died, but over time, the night before became filled with fear and symbols of death. Today, Halloween is known for ghosts, witches, and demons—things that the Bible clearly warns against. Deuteronomy 18:10–12 (NLT) says, “Do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”

Death is not something to joke about or celebrate. It is the result of sin. Romans 6:23 (NLT) says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus conquered death through His resurrection, giving eternal life to all who believe in Him. To celebrate death is to celebrate something that Jesus already defeated. First Corinthians 15:57 (NLT) says, “But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Instead of taking part in Halloween, Christians should celebrate life. Jesus said in John 10:10 (NLT), “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” The Lord calls His people to focus on what is pure and good. Philippians 4:8 (NLT) says, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.” Halloween does not reflect those things. It celebrates fear, darkness, and death.

Believers can use this time to shine the light of Jesus instead. Matthew 5:16 (NLT) says, “Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Christians should turn away from Halloween and choose to honor the Lord, who is the giver of eternal life.
