A Losing Proposition.

Hollywood is replete with films depicting humanity uniting to war against an external threat from above. Some grotesque alien race is presented as a threat to our survival. In the movies, the conquerors are the bad guys, and we are encouraged to cheer for fallen humanity. These depictions, unfortunately, seem to be preparing men’s hearts to join in the war against Christ when He comes.
This final battle reveals a solemn truth in that God gave humanity free will. Love demands freedom; else, it ceases to be love. All sentient creatures have been granted the choice to worship and obey God or to join the rebellion against His government. We have known for a long time that Christ is coming and that there is a great battle to face in these last days. But we also know the end of the story.
When humans fight against God, they always lose. How could they not fail when fighting against the God who created them and sustains them? “In whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?” (Job 12:10).
Yet humans seem to always be fighting against God. And here, we see another futile attempt of fallen humanity to unite and make war against God—in this case, the imagery is a war “against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.” Horses in the Old Testament are often symbols of the power of armies; the symbolism here is the same: These rebellious people have chosen to fight against a powerful God.
Two thousand years ago, at the cross, Jesus defeated the forces of darkness, “having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15). And, by His grace, we can choose to claim His victory for ourselves and, thus, remain on the winning side in a war that has been won for us by Jesus.
Dear Jesus, by faith I claim Your absolute victory at the cross over evil; I rejoice in standing on the winning side.
