1 Samuel 17:1-11 NKJV
1 Samuel 17:1-11 Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle, and were gathered at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah; they encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephes Dammim.
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array against the Philistines.
The philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.
And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the height of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.
And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders.
Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels ; and a shield bearer went before him.
Then he cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, "Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.
"if he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be be our servants and serve us."
And the Philistine said, "I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together."
When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
1 Samuel 8:10-22 So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who asked him for a king.
And he said, "This will be the behavior of the king who I will reign over you; He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots.
"He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.
"He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers,
"And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants.
"He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants.
"And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work.
"He will take a tenth of your sheep. and you will be his servants.
"And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the LORD will not hear you in that day."
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, "No, but we will have a king over us,
"that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles."
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the LORD.
So the LORD said to Samuel, "Heed their voice, and make them a king." And Samuel said to the men of Israel, "Every man go to his city."
1 Samuel 11:1-6 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you."
And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, "On this condition I will make a covenant with you, that I may put out aa your right eyes, and bring reproach of all Israel.
Then the elders of Jabesh said to him, "Hold off for seven days, that we may send messengers to all the territory of Israel. And then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you."
So the messengers came to gilead of Saul and told the news in the hearing of the people. And all the people lifted up their voices and wept.
Now there was Saul, coming behind the herd from the field; and Saul said, "What troubles the people, that they weep? And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh,
Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard the news, and his anger was greatly aroused.
