THROUGH THE BIBLE - November 2
Genesis 1 – “In the Beginning, God...”
Introduction
Genesis 1 is the opening chapter of the Bible—the foundation of everything we believe. It introduces us to God as the Creator, the origin of the universe, and the purpose of humanity. For beginners, it’s not just a story about how the world began—it’s a revelation of who God is and why we exist.
Genesis 1 answers life’s biggest questions:
● Where did we come from?
● Why are we here?
● Who made all of this?
The answer begins simply: “In the beginning, God created...”
Context
● Author: Moses, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (around 1400 B.C.)
● Audience: The people of Israel after being delivered from slavery in Egypt—learning who their God truly was.
● Purpose: To show that the Lord—not the Egyptian gods or nature—is the one true Creator of everything.
● Setting: The creation of the world before the fall of man, before sin entered.
Genesis means “beginning.” The chapter sets the stage for everything else in Scripture—creation, order, purpose, and God’s goodness.
Verse-by-Verse Overview
Verses 1–2: God begins creation.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God existed before time and created everything from nothing. The earth was formless, empty, and dark—until
God spoke.
Key truth: God is eternal and powerful; He brings order from chaos.
Verses 3–5: Day 1 – Light and darkness.
God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. He separated light from darkness, calling them “day” and “night.”
Lesson: God’s Word has power. When He speaks, things happen. His Word still brings light into dark places—our lives included.
Verses 6–8: Day 2 – Sky and waters.
God created the expanse (sky) to separate waters above (clouds) from waters below (oceans).
Lesson: God is a God of design, order, and separation.
Verses 9–13: Day 3 – Land, sea, and vegetation.
He gathered the waters so dry land appeared and created plants and trees to reproduce.
Lesson: God provides everything needed for life and growth.
Verses 14–19: Day 4 – Sun, moon, and stars. God set lights in the sky to mark days, seasons, and years.
Lesson: Creation has purpose and order. Even time belongs to God.
Verses 20–23: Day 5 – Fish and birds. God filled the seas with creatures and the sky with birds, blessing them to multiply.
Lesson: God loves abundance and beauty—He fills emptiness with life.
Verses 24–25: Day 6 (part 1) – Land animals. God created livestock, wild animals, and all creatures that crawl.
Lesson: Every part of creation reflects God’s creativity.
Verses 26–28: Day 6 (part 2) – Humanity.
God created mankind in His own image—male and female—to rule over the earth and care for creation.
Lesson: You were made in God’s image—unique, valuable, and with purpose. You reflect His character through love, creativity, and responsibility.
Verses 29–31: Provision and rest.
God provided food for every creature and looked at all He had made. “It was very good.” Lesson: God’s creation is good, and His desire is for us to live in harmony with Him and His creation.
Application for Today
1. Remember Who God Is – He is the Creator; nothing is too big for Him.
2. See Your Worth – You are made in His image; your life has meaning and purpose.
3. Trust His Word – His Word still creates light and change in dark situations.
4. Care for Creation – Steward the earth wisely; it’s God’s gift.
5. Rest in His Goodness – Just as God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2), we are called to rest in
Him.
Summary
Genesis 1 reveals God as the powerful Creator and loving Designer. Everything He made was intentional and good. Humanity is His masterpiece, created in His image to represent Him on earth. When we read Genesis 1, we are reminded that we are not accidents. Life has meaning because it came from the heart of a loving, purposeful God.
