In 1517 a man called MARTIN LUTHER who was a Catholic monk, a Catholic preacher, a Catholic scholar, a Bible scholar he became disillusioned and he realized by Bible study that much of what the Catholic church was teaching was wrong, at the very foundation of those errors was the fact that the church taught salvation is by faith and works and can only be access through the Catholic church.
MARTIN LUTHER had read in Hebakkuk 2:4 "... the just shall live by faith". An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. Indulgences may be applied to the living or the dead." (Catholic Catechism)
The Roman Catholic Church teaches that after death, everyone who has sinned will go to "purgatory", where they will face punishment for their sins. After this they are then allowed into the heavenly kingdom, once they have "PAID" for their sins. But with an indulgence, you can pay the church some money and you will receive an indulgence which will either reduce your time in "purgatory" or erase it all together and because people were blind because the Bible had largely been banned people were attracted to paying indulgences and they paid money, By the way, the Catholic church was raising money to build st Peter's basilica one of the most magnificent church structures on the face of the earth, Vatican was built on indulgences, so TETZEL was said to sell indulgences and MARTIN LUTHER exposed and objected the error of indulgences, so in October 31 in 1517 in the town of Wittenberg he nailed on the door of the church at Wittenberg his 95 Thesis which were objections to what the Catholic church was teaching.
Now anyone who knows the Bible will see that there is grave error in this teaching, because not only is the grace of God a FREE GIFT to anyone, but Christ Jesus PAID the FULL PRICE for our sins.
Now this movement which began with Martin Luther mainly became known as the PROTESTANT REFORMATION because LUTHER protested against the false teachings of the Catholic church, he never left the church but he challenged the church, he was called before the highest council to retract his attack on the church and he refused to retract his position because God was using Martin Luther to open the eyes of millions who had been in darkness because it was illegal to read the Bible for hundred of years during the dark ages.
