China's Xi Jinping Launches the Largest Major Crackdown on Christians

Chinese President Xi Jinping has launched the Largest major crackdown on the country's Christian population, marking one of the most significant suppressions in years, according to a recent news report.

Recent Arrests Target Prominent House Churches:
Earlier this month, Beijing authorities arrested a prominent underground church pastor and more than 20 other clergy and parishioners. The target of the latest crackdown is Zion Church, one of Beijing’s largest house churches. Its founder, Ezra Jin Mingli, was rounded up and detained along with over 20 fellow parishioners.

Grace Jin Drexel, the daughter of Ezra Jin Mingli, reported that between October 9th and 11th, up to 30 church leaders were taken from nine different cities. She expressed concern for her father's health, noting that he has severe diabetes and is not being allowed to use his own medication.

A History of Suppression and Surveillance:
The latest actions are part of a broader, years-long trend under Xi Jinping's leadership to tighten control over all religious groups.

* Zion Church Ban (2018): Beijing previously banned Zion Church after its pastors refused to install facial recognition cameras. This forced the congregation to go mostly virtual, but it actually led to dramatic growth, expanding the membership from 1,500 to over 10,000 daily worshippers across 40 cities by 2018.

* The Case of Holy Love Fellowship: Another example is the Holy Love Fellowship led by Pastor Xu Yonghai. In 2014, authorities detained 13 members of his parish for a month, primarily because they "defended the rights of other churches". Xu's sanctuary was a secret location—the sixth floor of an unmarked Beijing apartment building.

* Demolition and Control: Christian activists estimate the government has demolished thousands of unsanctioned churches. While government-approved ministries exist, they are required to display banners that endorse the Communist Party's religious direction.

* Hostage Churches: Grace Jin Drexel explained that a state-sanctioned church operates under the "ultimate control" of the Chinese Communist Party, which dictates sermons, baptism numbers, and prohibits children under 18 from attending services due to laws against proselytization. Her father, Ezra Jin Mingli, who initially worked for a state-sponsored church, ultimately left to found an unsanctioned church because he realized the state-controlled church was one "in hostage"

Ideological Underpinnings:
President Xi Jinping views minorities, their cultures, and religions as "threats to stability". This ideological drive is not limited to Christians; it also includes the widely documented campaign against the Muslim Uyghurs, for whom Beijing set up what activists call concentration camps, leading the U.S. to accuse Beijing of Genocide.

A Call for International Intervention:
Bill Drexel, the son-in-law of Ezra Jin Mingli, called on President Trump to address the issue during his upcoming meeting with Xi Jinping. He asked Trump to send a clear message that "taking prisoners of conscience as hostage in advance of these sorts of negotiations is not all right and that these prisoners need to be freed". Grace Jin Drexel appealed to the global church to "rise up and pray with us on asking my father and the 22 others to be released".
