Precious Intimacy

“It is God who avenges me, and subdues the peoples under me; He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man.” Psalm 18:47–48

I had always suffered from feeling misunderstood and lonely—until a fellow soldier gave me a New Testament while I was in the army. As I read it, I realized that Jesus Christ had felt that same loneliness, and suddenly, I felt a real closeness to Him. I understood Him, and He understood me.

As I marveled at this, I became afraid of losing that closeness and wondered what I would have to do to stay in that intimate relationship with my Savior. Of course, the obvious way would be to communicate with Him, and as I prayed, I became more convinced than ever that He was alive. How amazing, I thought. He controls the entire Universe, and yet He loves me!

The officers in the Russian army didn't like me, or more precisely, they hated me! So I often sat in the guardhouse, offended and angry. However, God was already bringing about change—not in them, but in me! I desperately prayed to learn how to forgive, and the miracle happened. I prayed that my relationship with them might improve, and eventually, they became friendly.

All this greatly strengthened my faith in God.

At the same time, thanks to my relationship with the Lord, I realized that my little "business" in the army of buying and reselling cannabis to soldiers from my unit was a sin, and out of gratitude and love for God, I gave it all up. The soldiers, however, were not happy at all and began to threaten me. They beat my friend from whom I bought the drugs, and that night, I covered myself with a blanket in fear and began to pray. Lord, I prayed, You've promised that whoever touches me touches the apple of your eye, and You know I don't want to fight. Please protect me from them. Not only did they not beat me, but the next day, a hefty guy named Sergei called me to the washroom and apologized to me! He thought I'd been spreading lies about him, but when he found out this wasn't so, he knelt in front of me and asked for forgiveness!

What a miracle that was. Our Lord promises to change our hearts and protect us from our enemies. He abounds in forgiveness and mercy.
