Mystical Gardens Tale
Before You Enter the Garden:
There are some lessons we only learn when the weight of the world no longer holds us. When gold loses its shine and the heart is stripped bare, truth finally speaks.
Some come seeking peace. Others come seeking power. And a fewโlike the man in this taleโcome seeking heaven itself, yet carry with them the very chains that keep them from entering.
Some stand at the edge of heaven long before they cross its threshold.
It is there, in that thin place between what is seen and what is eternal, that truth reveals itself.
The Price of Heaven
Thomas had known poverty like a shadow that followed him from childhood.
He remembered the ache of hunger, the torn clothes, and the way peopleโs eyes passed over him as if he didnโt exist.
So when wealth cameโwhen his hands finally held what others once denied himโhe swore heโd never be poor again.
His barns filled. His ledgers grew fat.
And though his table overflowed, his heart remained empty.
One day, he heard a preacherโs voice from the street corner, speaking of a paradise unlike any heโd imagined.
โHeaven,โ the preacher said, โis a place of light and beauty. The streets are paved with gold. The gates are made of pearl. There is no sickness, no sorrowโonly peace everlasting.โ
Thomas lingered, his heart stirring with something close to longing. If heaven is built of gold, he thought, then I belong there. I have more than enough to offer.
From that day on, he gave to every cause he could findโchurches, charities, orphanages. He even built a small chapel on his estate and had his name engraved above the door. Each gift made him feel closer to heaven, though it never brought peace.
Then another preacher came through townโa ragged man with rough hands and a steady gaze. โIt is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle,โ he said, โthan for a rich man to enter heaven.โ
Thomas bristled. โThat man was wrong,โ he muttered. "God values beauty, and I have built plenty of that. If heaven is made of gold, He must honor those who know its worth.โ But the words followed him like a shadow.
Years passed. His wealth grew. And then came the letterโhis diagnosis, final and cold. No doctor could cure it. No money could bargain with time.
That night he had a dream of standing at the gates of heaven, but he could not enter. Jesus stood before him and said "You must leave, I don't know you."
Thomas tried to tell him if all the things he had done for him and how he deserved to be in heaven. When the Father appeared, He said "I know you not. You have done nothing for me, but only for yourself."
The gate of pearl slammed in his face.
When he woke, he walked his estate, restless and afraid. The wind had gone still, and the world around him seemed caught between dusk and dawn. He passed the chapel heโd built and paused beside the garden wall.
Thatโs when he saw it. Beyond the wall, faint and shifting like a reflection on water, was a garden that had never been there before. The air shimmered with quiet light.
Flowers glowed softly, and in the center, a tree spread its branches as if reaching between two worlds.
Thomas blinked. The image wavered, almost gone, but not before his heart knew what his eyes could not explain.
Heaven was realโand it could not be bought.
A voice seemed to whisper through the stillness, not loud, but alive: "You cannot buy what has already been paid for.โ
He fell to his knees, his riches forgotten. Tears darkened the earth beneath him. "Lord,โ he said, voice breaking, โIโve tried to earn what Youโve already given. I see it now. Take whatโs left of me. Lead me home.โ
The wind stirred again, gentle and sweet.
The garden faded into the light, leaving only the scent of lilies on the air. And that is when Thomas felt peaceโnot bought, but given.
Heaven is not a prize for the wealthy, nor a wage for the righteous. It is a home for the surrendered heart.
โFor what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?โ โ Mark 8:36
Reflection on the Tale
There are those who spend a lifetime chasing what they can hold in their handsโ
gold, titles, security, powerโ but none of it can open the gates of heaven.
Sometimes, it isnโt until everything begins to slip away that we finally understand the truth: heaven is not a place we buy our way into, but a gift we are invited into.
This weekโs tale, The Price of Heaven, reminds us that grace has already been paid for in full. All that remains is for the heart to surrender.
The richest man is the one who surrenders all. Heaven cannot be purchased, but it can be receivedโby the heart that yields to grace.
โFor where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.โ
โ Matthew 6:21
