Tick Tock.

“But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.” Matthew 25:5
As a teenager, I was invited to a friend’s home for Thanksgiving. I packed a small suitcase and hit the road. Travel of any kind always excited me, and I enjoyed the four-hour drive. Arriving at their lovely home, the family graciously greeted me and ushered me to the downstairs guestroom—the only bedroom on the first floor. It had been a long day for me, and I was tired. I unpacked and joined them for the evening meal.
I guess it was a combination of weariness and excitement that first blocked out the sounds reverberating through the downstairs. It wasn’t until I was getting into bed that I noticed the melodic sounds of a grandfather clock announcing the time with ten deep gongs. How neat! Fifteen minutes later, I became acutely aware of an extensive collection of clocks announcing the passage of time with “cuckoos” and chimes, Then my ears tuned into all the ticking and tocking going on just outside my bedroom door. Just as I became drowsy, the constant gongs and chimes would make me alert again. Every fifteen minutes the announcements from all these clocks would increase my awareness of the passing of time.
It made for a long night, and I was more than eager for the day to dawn. When it did, I wasn’t at my best, but youthful energy propelled me through the activities of the day. As nighttime arrived, I was exhausted and needed sleep badly. In the guestroom, I was quickly reminded that “grandfather” and all his clock mates were still on duty and prepared to make known the exact position of the hands on their dials in the prescribed 15-minute intervals.
It was different for me on this second night. Because of sheer exhaustion, the ticking of the clocks lulled me to sleep before midnight. I somehow passed the threshold of active hearing and slept soundly, blocking out the messages of time coming from the dozens of clock sentinels just beyond my closed door.
My friends, the clock is ticking. The midnight cry of Christ’s return is approaching. Scripture warns us to be alert, but like the ten virgins of Matthew 25 we have wearied of waiting, and we often slumber. We must be cautious and vigilant of the announcements we hear—time is running out. Many of us have passed over the threshold of active hearing, and we are sound asleep. Please, continually invite the Holy Spirit into your life each day! Ask Him to make you aware of the signs of the times.
