THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
A Fishing Disaster

“That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the [a]saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16-19 (NIV)

After a morning rain, I ventured outside to check out our newly planted garden. Along the way I began to notice the worms crawling on the driveway, on the porch, and especially around the swimming pool. Since the storm had passed, I decided it was a perfect time to grab some of these slimy babies and head down to the pond.

Now, normally, I use chicken livers to entice the catfish. Today, however, I was going to use these worms to try my luck with bass or maybe bluegill. Just seconds after casting my line, I had my first fish; a bluegill. Within minutes, I had caught a bass, and then another. Excitement was building. I grabbed up more of those wiggly, obviously enticing critters, replenished the hook, and drew back for another cast.

And then it happened. As the bait hit the water and sunk, my reel fell to the ground in pieces! My line was out, but I had no way of pulling in any fish. I had been in such a hurry to go fishing that I had failed to inspect my equipment, which had gotten rusty and loose. As a fisherman, I was useless.

Jesus told us to be “fishers of men.” We are to share the gospel with a lost and hungry world with love and compassion. But how can we do that if we’re not properly equipped? How can Christ's love flow from us if we, ourselves, are empty?

Maybe it’s time for an equipment check. We need to go back to the basics—repentance, God’s Word, and prayer. We need to get love from the source of love, Jesus Christ. We need to ask God to fill us with His love so we can love others. It’s time to inspect our lives, get things in proper working order, and run back to the pond to begin again!
