When God Speaks in Unexpected Ways
Scripture
Numbers 22:28 (NKJV)
Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?
Hearing God in the Unlikely
In this verse, God used a donkey to get Balaam’s attention. Balaam was on his way to curse Israel, driven by greed and pride, but God opposed his path. The donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing before them and turned aside to save Balaam’s life. When Balaam grew angry and struck the animal, God miraculously opened the donkey’s mouth to speak.
For believers today, this story reminds us that God can use anyone or anything to speak to us. Sometimes His messages come through unexpected voices, circumstances, or even interruptions. When our hearts are set on our own plans instead of God’s, He may stop us in surprising ways to turn us back to His will.
This verse challenges us to stay sensitive to God’s voice—humble enough to listen, even when His correction comes through unlikely means.
Reflection Questions
1. Am I open to hearing God’s voice, even when it comes in unexpected ways?
2. Have I ever resisted His direction because I was set on my own path?
3. How can I stay humble and teachable when God corrects me?
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for loving me enough to correct me when I go astray. Help me to listen for Your voice in every circumstance. Give me humility to receive Your guidance, even when it comes in unexpected ways. Keep my heart aligned with Your will. In Jesus name, Amen.
