My Path of Growth.

“It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.” Psalm 119:71
Often people ask, “Why should I strive for purity when the unscrupulous prosper?” There was a time when I thought that way—but the Lord showed me another way.
I’m from Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, but my wife and I decided to move to Riga, the capital of Latvia. At first, everything was great. I sold commercial industrial equipment and made good money, but when our office was robbed, they blamed me! Desperate for answers, I spoke to a priest, but the conversation was cut short when he asked if I’d been baptized, and I told him I didn’t remember.
With a heavy heart, I was walking down the street when a lady selling books on the sidewalk asked me, “Sir, are you feeling bad?”
I nodded, and she said, “Then you should buy this book.”
I told her I had no money, and she must have felt sorry for me because she just gave it to me. The book was about Jesus and His love for sinners, and as I read it on the train, it touched my heart deeply and I began to cry. Later, I bought other books from her, and she invited me to a worship service on Saturday. The church was old, but they had an organ. As I listened to the music, it made me feel calm and reverent.
Eventually, the person who had stolen from my workplace was caught. It was my own business partner! The company owners told me to “deal with him”—that is, drastically and permanently eliminate him so others wouldn’t try the same! In return, they promised a “blood relationship” with me so I could regain my status while gradually paying back the stolen amount. Thankfully, I was familiar with God’s commandments by then, so I was spared from making that fatal mistake. I flatly refused any showdowns with my former partner, so the company took away my car, my apartment, and other things, forcing me to live in an unheated room for three weeks until a friend took me in. Out of kindness, he gave me $200 to get back to Russia.
On the train, I saw a woman reading her Bible, and I talked to her all the way to Nizhny Novgorod. Then she gave me her Bible and invited me to church! As I read God’s Word, my life began to change. And although I had difficulty finding a job, it gave me time to work on my relationship with my parents. I did everything I could to show them Christ’s love and be reconciled with them.
Eventually, I got a job as manager of a rest home, but many who worked there had ties to crime. Soon I arrived home drunk because my work friends had dragged me to a casino, and I thought it would be disrespectful not to go. I started addressing my wife and son in ugly tones and showed them neither love nor understanding. Realizing I was near losing my family, I resigned—and began selling beer! I earned a lot in two months but knew I’d never be truly free if I kept working with people who had ties to crime.
Finally, I became a long-haul truck driver and began to learn dependence upon God. As my son grew, we traveled together and became very close. We shared a special closeness with God, and our difficulties were well worthwhile because they allowed us to see His miracles and know He was never far.
Our business expanded. We bought cars and hired drivers. No one left without praying, and upon their return, they shared how God had helped them. However, no matter what I did, I never became rich, and looking back, I realize that if I had, I would’ve left the Lord. Instead, with the help of trials, He fought for my soul! “Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?” Matthew 6:25.
One day, a stranger approached me and said he could lend me money to expand my business. I took advantage of his offer and bought two beautiful trucks that served us well—until they didn’t—because I’d gotten away from God, His laws, and His blessings. Despite calculating everything correctly, this way of life had threatened my spiritual growth, so God brought my undertaking to an end.
Finally, I switched to a new type of work, delivering soil to construction sites. Today our family business depends on God, and we trust His will as we face our difficulties. Nothing is impossible for Him! But before giving, God has the right to test our faith to see if we will properly use His blessings. Will we use them for our good or His glory?
Throughout my journey, the Lord has revealed the truth in stages and to the extent I could absorb it. The condition for my spiritual growth has always been the application of the Word of God in my life. Tests were needed to cleanse my soul of pride, conceit, and self-interest. Along the way, I stumbled, but I didn’t take my hand away from His. He lifts me up and gives me strength to go on.
