Betting on God – Surrendering to Christ

Pastor Joseph Clark

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
— John 14:6

Choosing Christ as your Lord and Savior is not a matter of trying out religion like a seasonal trend or a new lifestyle experiment. Christianity is not a spiritual hobby or a “self-improvement” program. It is a life-altering surrender. It is stepping into a relationship — a covenant — between you and the living God. Scripture teaches that in Christ we are adopted as sons and daughters into the family of God (Ephesians 1:5), and that this new relationship changes everything.

To surrender to Christ is first to see ourselves as we truly are: sinners in desperate need of grace. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). No amount of good deeds, religious rituals, or moral striving can bridge the gap between our fallen condition and God’s holiness. We cannot save ourselves — and God never asked us to. Instead, He sent His Son. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

Coming to Christ means answering God’s call of obedience — not as slaves under fear, but as redeemed children who finally come home. Jesus Himself said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Following Christ means taking His hand daily and allowing Him to lead, shape, purify, strengthen, and redirect every part of our lives. It means surrendering our will to His. It is declaring before God:

“I cannot do this on my own.
I need You.
I am Your disciple.
I am Your servant.
I am Your child.
Put me to work, Lord.”

This surrender is not a gamble — it is the only sure foundation in a world of uncertainty. Everything else we trust in eventually collapses: wealth, strength, pleasures, relationships, and human achievements all fade. Jesus alone is the solid rock. “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11).

Surrendering to Him also means embracing His promise: that whoever comes to Him will never be cast out (John 6:37). It means accepting the eternal life that He freely gives, not because we earned it, but because He paid for it in full at the cross. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).

When a person bows their heart to Christ, heaven rejoices (Luke 15:7). The Holy Spirit seals them, strengthens them, and begins a lifelong work of transformation (Philippians 1:6). This is why the decision to surrender to Christ is not merely a moment — it is the beginning of a new life, one that Jesus describes as being “born again” (John 3:3).

If you are ready to surrender — to stop running, to stop fighting, to stop carrying your sins and burdens alone — the Lord is ready to receive you right now. Scripture promises, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

Below is a prayer that expresses this surrender. The words themselves are not magic — it is the sincerity of your heart that matters. But if this reflects your desire, pray it to the Lord:

A Prayer of Surrender to Christ

“Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. In Your Holy name, Lord Jesus, I pray. Amen.”
