True Love.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

Love is one of those words that has so much depth and meaning that no one can fully understand it. Love has its place in almost everything we do, but how does one really define love?

I think of a story I heard once about a mother hen caught in a forest fire. After the flames died down, firefighters searching for hot spots came across a charred bird carcass on the forest floor. Wondering why the bird hadn’t flown away to escape, a firefighter moved the bird aside, and to the surprise of all who witnessed it, several baby chicks scurried out from underneath. The mother hen had sacrificed her life so her babies would survive.

I couldn’t help but remember this story when I was thinking about what love really is. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” This is the type of love that mother hen had for her babies. But love goes beyond that. And God’s love has a much greater reach than we can possibly understand.

Romans 5:8 tells us that Christ died for sinners, but how can we fully understand this? Sinners are worthy of death, but in His great love, Jesus saw that we were worth dying for. Stop for a moment and try to picture the scene in Heaven as the Father and His Son labor over what to do for fallen man?

Can you see Jesus, pleading, “Father, I have to save My people. I love them so much and I cannot lose them. I am willing to die so they may have eternal life.”

Then, can you see our Heavenly Father’s tears as He says, “I know You must go, but I cannot lose You. No, please, I cannot let You go. You’re my beloved son.”

What a struggle this must have been.

I love what 1 John 4:19 says, “We love Him because He first loved us.” Do you love Jesus? He gave His all—His life—so we can have life. Why not give your life completely to Him? Start experiencing what His love will do in your life if you only give Him a chance.

Jesus is waiting with open arms, saying, “Welcome home my child. I love you so much!” He will never let you go.
