“It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.” Isaiah 65:24
Have you had times when you needed to find something that was nowhere to be seen? I certainly have. I’ve searched everywhere, many times—under, behind, in—but it was nowhere. I’ve spent hours searching, but it remained hidden. Sometimes I’ve put it “in a safe place” so I can find it again, easily; then I couldn’t remember where that safe place was!
I remember one time when my elder son James was little. He’d made a beautiful shape out of interlocking blocks. It was a work of art. My sister lived an hour away and was moving house that day, and Dad and I were going up to help her move; so I decided I would take the artwork and show her.
It was time to go, but I couldn’t find the artwork anywhere. I searched and I prayed, over and over again, but it was no good. I felt strongly convicted to go outside to look for it, but that was silly. James hadn’t taken it outside. I kept stifling that conviction as I searched, feeling more and more aggravated that God was not answering me. Finally, my boys and I had to leave as we were now running late. I was discouraged, and annoyed that God hadn’t helped me, especially since I knew He could see it the whole time. Why didn’t He help me find it? Why didn’t He tell me where it was?
I returned home later that day and, as I walked from the car to the house, I looked up at the window of James’ bedroom. There, sitting on the window sill behind the open curtain, was the artwork I’d searched for that morning. It couldn’t be seen from inside the house—I had to look from outside to be able to see it! I felt terrible. All day I had been annoyed with God, thinking He hadn’t heard or helped me. How wrong I had been.
I realized that God had given me the answer—but I knew better. Since that time, I’ve tried to listen quietly when I ask God to help me find something. God is faithful and knows everything. We don’t deserve His help, yet He is willing to listen and answer. But, do we listen to Him?
Next time you misplace something, ask God to tell you where it is. He can see it all the time. He is willing to help you. Just learn to listen quietly for His answers.
