THE ADVENT TRUTH
People love to pit the Holy Spirit against the Ten Commandments—as if the Spirit leads us away from the law God wrote with His own finger. That’s not the Holy Spirit—that’s spiritual confusion. The Bible says the opposite: “The law is spiritual” (Romans 7:14) and “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21). The Spirit never contradicts the Word—He inspired it.
The brother said: “We know sin from the Holy Spirit, not the Ten Commandments.” But what does the Bible say?
Sin is defined by the law.
– “Sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4)
– “By the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20)
– “I had not known sin but by the law” (Romans 7:7)
The Holy Spirit doesn’t replace God’s law—He convicts us of breaking it (John 16:8). Feelings aren’t the standard—Scripture is. God doesn’t leave sin up to emotional interpretation.
Pornography? The 7th commandment covers it: “Thou shalt not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14). And Jesus expanded it: “Whoever looks with lust has already committed adultery in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). Lust = adultery. That’s in the Ten Commandments.
Hate? That’s murder according to Jesus, and the 6th commandment says “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13; see 1 John 3:15). Gossip and backbiting? That violates “Thou shalt not bear false witness” and “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Exodus 20:16; Leviticus 19:18).
He said the Ten Commandments are “limited.” No—they are foundational. Every sin fits under them because they are God’s moral standard. Jesus didn’t replace them—He magnified them (Isaiah 42:21). That’s why the New Testament repeatedly quotes them (Romans 13:8–10, James 2:8–12).
Saying we don’t need the law because we have the Spirit is like saying we don’t need traffic signs because we have headlights. The Spirit guides—but the law defines the path.
The last day people of God are identified in one clear way: “Here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.” (Revelation 14:12). The real issue isn’t knowledge—it’s obedience.
