Matthew 9:1-13 ESV

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

Matthew 9:1-13 And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.

And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven."

And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming."

But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts?

For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'?

But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--he then said to the paralytic--"Rise, pick up your bed and go home."

And he rose and went home,

When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Jesus Calls Matthew

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him.

And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.

And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

Go and learn what this means; 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

Matthew 12:22-30 Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw,

And all the people were amazed, and said, "Can this be the Son of David?"

But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons,"

Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand,

And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?

And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.

But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods. unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house.

Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Mark 2:3-5 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.

And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.

And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

Luke 5:18-20 And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus,

but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus.

And when he saw their faith, he said, "Man, your sins are forgiven you."

Matthew 11:16-19 "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,

"'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn,'

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has  a demon.'

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."

Hosea 6:6 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Matthew 12:7-8 And if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless,

For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath."
