The Bible emphasizes that a good reputation, or "name," is a valuable asset that is far more precious than material wealth

. A person's reputation is viewed as a reflection of their character, integrity, and honor.

The Bible highlights the value of a good name:

A good name is better than riches: The Bible states that a good name is preferable to great riches and favor is better than silver and gold. It is also considered better than precious ointment, with the day of death being better than the day of one's birth. An honorable legacy is seen as more important than the temporary things of life.

A good name brings a lasting legacy: The memory of the righteous is blessed, while the name of the wicked will decay. This suggests a righteous life leaves a blessed memory, while the wicked leave a legacy of shame. The righteous are said to be in everlasting remembrance.

Actions protect or harm reputation: Believers are encouraged to behave in a way that avoids bringing shame upon their faith. Even a small act of foolishness can significantly damage a person's reputation for wisdom and honor.

Honor from men versus honor from God: The Bible distinguishes between seeking honor from others and seeking honor from God. Prioritizing human approval over divine approval is seen as a barrier to true faith. True honor is a reward from God for faithful service.
