Matthew 9:1-13 NAB

The Healing of a Paralytic

Matthew 9:1-13 He entered a boat, made the crossing, and came into his own town.

And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Courage, child, your sins are forgiven."

At that, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming."

Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said, "Why do your harbor evil thoughts?

Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'?

But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--he then said to the paralytic, "Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home."

He rose and went home.

When the crowds saw this they were struck with awe and glorified God who had given such authority to human beings.

The Call of Matthew

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him.

While he was at the table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and eat with Jesus and his disciples.

The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.

Go and learn the meaning of the words, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."

Jesus and Beelzebul

Matthew 12:22-30 Then they brought to him a demonic who was blind and mute. He cured the mute person so that he could speak and see.

All the crowd was astonished, and said, "Could this perhaps be the Son of David?"

But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "This man drives out demons only by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons."

But he knew what they were thinking and said to them. "Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and no town or house divided against itself will stand.

And if Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself; how, then, will his kingdom stand?

And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom does your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges.

But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

How can anyone enter a strong man's house and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Mark 2:3-5 They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.

Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to  the paralytic, "Child, your sins are forgiven."

Luke 5:18-20 And some men brought on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed; they were trying to bring him in and set Moses Ishaku in his presence.

But not finding a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the tiles into the middle in front of Jesus.

When he saw their faith, he said, "As for you, your sins are forgiven."

Matthew 11:16-19 "To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another,

'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn,'

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.'

The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is vindicated by her works."

Hosea 6:6 For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than holocausts.

Matthew 12:7-8 If you knew what this meant, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned these innocent men.

For he Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath."
