Always The Truth Nothing But
Pastor James
The Bible indicates that preaching the truth is
a core duty of Christian ministry, which involves proclaiming the Gospel, correcting false teachings, and speaking with both love and patience. The truth itself is not merely a set of facts but is personified in Jesus Christ, and knowing it is what sets people free from the bondage of sin.
The content of the truth
Jesus as the truth: According to the Bible, Jesus is the ultimate truth.
John 14:6
records Jesus as saying, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me".
The Word of God as truth: The Bible itself is considered the Word of God and is the foundation
of truth for believers. In
John 17:17,
Jesus prays to the Father, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth". Preaching the truth, therefore, means to faithfully preach the Scriptures.
The Gospel message: The central truth to be preached is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This "good news" is about salvation and eternal life through faith in him. The Apostle Paul warns against
preaching "any other gospel".
The method of preaching the truth
Speak the truth in love: In
Ephesians 4:15,
Christians are instructed to be "speaking the truth in love." This means holding firm to biblical truth while treating others with kindness and compassion. The two concepts are inseparable, as truth without love is harsh, and love without truth is empty.
Preach the word "in season and out of season": The Apostle Paul's charge to
Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2
is to "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine." This requires preachers to be ready at all times to proclaim the truth, whether it is convenient, popular, or met with opposition.
With sound doctrine: Paul’s instructions emphasize the importance of "sound doctrine" to counter false teachers and myths. The preacher is to use the inspired Scriptures for teaching, reproof, and instruction in righteousness.
The purpose of the truth
Freedom from sin: Jesus taught, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"
(John 8:32).
This freedom is from the spiritual bondage of sin, and the path to this freedom is through knowing Christ and abiding in his word.
Spiritual growth: Embracing and living by the truth is a process of sanctification, where believers are set apart and transformed.
As Ephesians 4:15 says,
"speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ".
Defense against deception: The Bible frequently warns against false prophets and deceptive teachings. Preaching the truth is a vital defense for believers, anchoring them in sound doctrine so they will not be led astray by myths and fables.
