Get Off the Couch
Accumulating wealth has been the principle pursuit of humanity since the beginning of time. People think that riches will bring happiness, comfort, security, position, and power. Young people think they have all the time in the world, not giving much thought to what is really important in life and how short time really is. But thoughts like that lead to an empty, meaningless existence. It’s so easy to get distracted by insignificant and trivial things that before you know it, you’re sixty years old, wondering where the time went, and frantic about your life’s purpose being unfulfilled. The truth is, time is precious and not to be wasted. From the moment you are born, you begin to die. The clock starts ticking, and the countdown begins. There is no “pause button” on life, so don’t wait another moment to be all that God wants you to be. It’s time to get off the couch and be the “master of your minutes.” When you gamble with your time, you are placing a bet you can’t cover. David struggled coming to terms with just how short life is. He prayed out to God in Psalm 39:4-7, “Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days, let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be. But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” David prayed this prayer because he realized his life was nearing an end, and he didn’t want to miss out on anything that God had planned for him. He was eager for God to reveal the plan for the remaining years of his life. The story of David brings hope to everyone. David was a man who sinned and failed miserably, yet God loved Him more than he could possibly imagine. As long as there is breath, it is not too late to turn your life over to God. Ask forgiveness for all the years wasted and pray that whatever time you have left, God will use you to the utmost. Text: Ephesians 5:15-17, Psalm 39:4-5, Proverbs 6:9-11, Romans 12:11
