THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
An Overcharged Heart.

By Deborah Shaffer November 24th, 2025

“And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” Luke 21:34 (KJV)

I really don’t know what harm can be done by overcharging a battery. I tried researching this information but got many conflicting results. Some say it can cause harm to the battery, while other articles say that is a myth. There is one thing, though, that can be harmful when overcharged: our heart.

The Bible tells us that we are to watch our everyday living very closely to make sure that we don’t “overcharge our hearts.” But what does this mean? It means that too much—of even a good thing—is dangerous when we become obsessed with it.

Surfeiting simply means overindulgence. Eating, for example, is good and necessary. However, when it becomes unrestrained, it turns into the sin of gluttony. The flip side is just as much a sin. If we become overly preoccupied with fitness and diet, it can become an idol and sin, as well. The same goes for entertainment. There’s nothing wrong with watching or listening to media programs and news if we do not overindulge in it or take audience to ungodly programming. Anything—shopping, hobbies, social media, even resting can be harmful when not under control.

We can become so preoccupied with the cares of this world that we forget why we are here and what our purpose in life is. There’s a danger of becoming so wrapped up in ourselves and our pleasures that “that day come on you unawares.” Whether we exit this life through natural death or alive when Jesus returns, being wrapped up in ourselves will cause us to be unprepared to meet our Maker.

We need to examine ourselves. What energy source is our hearts plugged into? Let’s be careful not to “overcharge” our hearts with the foolishness of excessive earthly pleasures. Let’s plug our hearts into the things of God, so our batteries are full and ready to meet God when our time comes!

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there’s anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8.
