You know who breaks my heart in the prodigal son story…
The other son.
Not the one who ran off…
Not the one who blew his inheritance…
The one nobody preaches about…
The one who stayed…
The one who didn’t have to fall short to stay with the father.
Who obeyed.
Who held it down while everything around him was falling apart.
The one who was faithful… And still felt forgotten.
See… We love to shout about the prodigal coming home, but almost nobody talks about the faithful child standing outside a party he never got invited to.
Because let’s be real…
Some of us have been the prodigal before… but a whole lot of us have been consistent…
The one who kept showing up.
Kept serving.
Kept forgiving.
Kept doing right even when doing right didn’t feel right or rewarding.
And what do you do when it feels like everybody who broke something is getting blessed before you do?
What do you do when you’ve been consistent but the celebration keeps happening in someone else’s house?
What do you do when it looks like God is running to the one who left and walking past the one who stayed?
Let me sit in that…
Because it hurts to feel overlooked for serving…
Watching God repeatedly bless people who just got done breaking you while you’ve been consistent for years.
Watching people celebrate the person who caused chaos while you were the one silently cleaning it up.
Watching others get applause for coming back when you… never… left… in the first place.
It not only hits a nerve.
It hurts…
And this is the part where most people stop reading….
But you’re not most people.
So let me go deeper.
The brother wasn’t mad because the prodigal son came home…
He was mad because it looked like no one noticed he never left.
The brother wasn’t angry because the prodigal son was celebrated…
He was angry because he wasn’t.
He wasn’t upset about the robe…
He was upset that no one ever wrapped him in one.
He wasn’t bothered by the ring…
He was bothered that no one ever honored his faithfulness.
He wasn’t jealous of the party…
He was hurt he never got one.
And before you judge him… how many of us have been him…
I know I can’t be the only one that has prayed God, do You see me…
God, do You remember me?
God, why does it look like You run harder for the ones who wandered than the ones who worshipped?
God, I’ve been faithful…
God, I’ve been consistent…
God, I’ve been obedient…
So why does it look like everybody else keeps getting the blessings I prayed for?
But here’s the part that wrecked me…
The father left the celebration to go talk to the son who wouldn’t come in.
That’s the revelation we always skip…
Meaning…
God doesn’t just run toward the broken… He goes toward the faithful too….
And then He said something that makes me want to cry every time..
Something we never sit with long enough…
He said… Everything I have has already been yours.
In other words..
You weren’t overlooked…
You were already trusted.
You weren’t forgotten…
You were already favored.
You weren’t denied….
You were already in the house
with keys to rooms the prodigal didn’t even know existed.
And this is the part where it gets real…
Some of us are so hurt and are grieved by the applause we didn’t get, that we can’t even see the anointing we already carry.
You wanted celebration but God gave you authority.
You wanted validation but God gave you access.
You wanted a moment but God gave you ministry.
The prodigal needed mercy…
but the faithful son still had inheritance.
The prodigal got the party…
but the faithful son had the power.
So hear me…
You don’t need a crowd to confirm what God already covered you with.
You don’t need a robe when you already carry the mantle.
You don’t need a feast when you already live in the Father’s house.
And this part might sting…
Because yes you might feel ignored but it’s only because God has been blessing you so consistently and quietly that you didn’t realize it was still a blessing.
Sometimes God doesn’t clap loud for you because His blessing on you has already been loud enough.
Sometimes God didn’t clap for you
because He crowned you instead.
And crowns are silent.
Oil is quiet.
Authority doesn’t need an announcement.
So hear me…
You are not the forgotten child.
You are the trusted one.
The consistent one.
The faithful one.
And heaven has seen EVERYTHING and I mean everything you’ve done
And God still sees you…
With love
The other son.
Not the one who ran off…
Not the one who blew his inheritance…
The one nobody preaches about…
The one who stayed…
