THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
A Lesson in Forgiveness

“Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Luke 6:37
I had struggled with an old resentment, but now, as I studied my Bible, I came across 1 John 4:8, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” A few verses later, I read, “If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?”
Suddenly, I understood it. God loves each of us so much that He feels our pain as His own and believes that the way we feel toward our neighbors is how we feel toward Him. If we are kind or harsh to others, He says, “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” Matthew 25:40.
For years I thought I’d loved God, but I hadn’t kept His commandment in relation to my ex-husband. I’d held resentment against him because he hadn’t supported his children, so in turn, I hadn’t allowed him to see them, although he’d asked me many times.
That very day, the Holy Spirit convicted me and softened my heart. A miracle happened, and I forgave my ex-husband; and when I did, God poured out His blessings on me. My ex-husband began to actively participate in our children’s lives, buying them the necessary things. When my daughter began planning for her wedding, I was very worried about where the money would come from since I had no savings and couldn’t get a loan. “Lord, I no longer know what to do with this, so I’m placing it in Your hands,” I prayed, and my heart became calm.
The next day, I asked my ex-husband for help, and he said, “She isn’t just your daughter, you know. She’s my daughter, too!” and gave me the money for a nice wedding dress. That Friday, we set the table at home for 30 of our non-believing relatives, and on Sunday, we set one for 70 of our church family. After feeding all those people, I’m still amazed that I don’t owe any money since half of it was paid for by the groom’s relatives, and my husband picked up the rest. The Lord made it so my meager salary was enough for all the other wedding expenses, and I realized that God wants to solve all our difficulties. He is the Friend who knows when we’re in trouble.
My ex-husband got remarried, and now we all meet on special family occasions. I am so glad there is no resentment towards him and no spirit of rivalry toward his new wife. Truly, God has brought healing to our hearts.
