A Place of Refuge

Scripture

Numbers 35:11 (NKJV)
Then you shall appoint cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person accidentally may flee there.

God Provides a Place of Safety

In this verse, God commands Israel to establish cities of refuge—places where someone who had accidentally caused the death of another could flee for protection. These cities were not places to hide from justice, but places where justice and mercy could work together. They provided safety, time, and fairness so that the innocent would not be harmed before their case was heard.

For believers today, the cities of refuge point us to Jesus Christ. He is our true refuge. When we are guilty, burdened, overwhelmed, or in need of mercy, we can run to Him. He offers forgiveness, protection, rest, and restoration. In Him we find safety from condemnation and security in God’s presence.

This verse reminds us that God cares about justice, mercy, and protection. He makes room for the hurting, the misunderstood, and the weary.

Reflection Questions

1. Do I run to Jesus as my refuge when I feel overwhelmed or accused?

2. In what areas of my life do I need God’s protection, mercy, or healing?

3. How can I extend mercy and safety to others as Christ has done for me?

Prayer

Lord God, thank You for being my refuge and place of safety. When I feel overwhelmed, accused, or burdened, help me to run to You. Thank You for the mercy and protection You provide through Jesus Christ. Teach me to trust in Your covering and to extend mercy to others. In Jesus name, Amen.
