“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye…. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked; but he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him.”
Psalm 32:8, 10
Recently, we went camping with some friends. It was our first trip after a long period of self-isolation, and everyone was very excited about the opportunity to travel and socialize.
Our destination was in the southern part of our region, and since we live in the northern part, we had to travel twice as far as everyone else. But that didn’t stop us. When the big day arrived, we
packed up and drove to meet our friends for the long-awaited trip. Then we drove to our campsite in a caravan of seven cars—the children happily watching each other through the windows, eager to play together.
Soon we turned off the highway onto a dirt road. At first it was good enough, despite a few huge puddles of water that reached the edge of our car doors. But after the next turn, I noticed the road surface had changed dramatically. The wet clay under our wheels was slippery, making it more difficult to stay on the dry part of the road. Now, I have to say that I’ve had plenty of experience driving on Russian dirt roads, and although our car is a minivan and not a Jeep, I was doing my best. But here we were, almost leading the caravan along this narrow road, and since there was no other alternative, I just followed the leader.
Then came the moment of our journey which we will be talking about during long winter evenings for many years to come! Our road went along a hill with a strong incline, and the clay had all of us moving sideways. This wasn’t the first time the lead driver had been down this road, so he steered his front wheels uphill, and slid down at a 45-degree angle!
Well, this is an interesting way to drive, I thought to myself. But since I obviously couldn’t go back, my only chance was to do the same. Mentally, I calculated the path I’d take and started moving; but either because my tires were different, or maybe because of the length of my car, our minivan was immediately pulled into a rut and stopped—drive wheels spinning, helplessly.
Now this may seem strange, but I remained absolutely calm. Why? Simply because I had a great team behind me. Over the next hour or so we made many attempts to rectify the situation, but what I’d like to focus on is the calmness that the Lord gave me. It was based on my confidence in Him and in the people He’d surrounded me with. There was no panic or concern that we would spend the rest of the day here in the mud, among mosquitoes and horseflies. Instead, there was a strong confidence in the support of the strongest and most faithful Friend in the Universe.
Of course, it took a while to get out of that rut, but instead of being exhausted, I was strengthened and inspired by faith in a strong and united team—led by the Lord, Himself.
