Till Death Do Us Part: Why God Opposes Divorce!
Marriage is not a social experiment; it is a sacred covenant designed by God.
When a man and a woman stand before God and witnesses to say, “Till death do us part,” they are not making a cultural promise — they are entering into a divine agreement.
In a generation where divorce has become common and celebrated, God’s position remains unchanged. Scripture boldly declares:
“For the LORD God of Israel says that He hates divorce…” – Malachi 2:16
God opposes divorce not because He lacks compassion, but because He understands the spiritual damage, emotional scars, and generational consequences it produces.
1. Marriage Is a Covenant, Not a Contract
A contract can be broken when conditions change. A covenant is sealed by commitment and sustained by sacrifice.
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24
Marriage makes two people one. Divorce is not just separation; it is the tearing apart of what God has joined together.
Jesus said:
“What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” – Matthew 19:6
When God joins, no human court has the moral authority to casually divide.
2. God Opposes Divorce Because It Violates His Design
Marriage reflects the relationship between Christ and the Church.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.” – Ephesians 5:25
Christ does not abandon His bride. He endured the cross for her. Divorce distorts the picture of Christ’s faithful love and reduces marriage to convenience instead of commitment.
3. Divorce Causes Deep Spiritual and Emotional Wounds
Malachi describes divorce as violence:
“For the LORD… says that He hates divorce, for it covers one’s garment with violence.” – Malachi 2:16
Divorce wounds:
* The hearts of spouses
* The destiny of children
* The testimony of believers
* The stability of families
* The spiritual covering God placed over the home
What God intended as a place of peace becomes a battlefield.
4. Jesus Restored God’s Original Standard.
When questioned about divorce, Jesus pointed back to God’s original intention:
“From the beginning it was not so.” – Matthew 19:8
Divorce was permitted in Moses' time because of the hardness of human hearts, not because it pleased God.
Grace was given, but God’s ideal remains lifelong union.
5. God Opposes Divorce Because
He Is a God of Restoration
God hates divorce, but He loves people. His desire is not punishment but healing.
He restores broken marriages.
He renews love that has grown cold.
He rebuilds what sin has shattered.
“I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten…” – Joel 2:25
God prefers reconciliation over separation, forgiveness over abandonment, and healing over destruction.
PRACTICAL LESSONS FOR MARRIAGE
* Choose commitment over emotions.
* Pray together before problems grow.
* Seek counsel before crisis.
* Forgive quickly and love deeply.
* Fight for your marriage, not against each other.
CONCLUSION
Marriage was designed to last a lifetime.
God opposes divorce because He values covenant, honors commitment, and protects destiny.
“Till death do us part” is not poetry — it is obedience.
When storms come, God does not advise escape; He supplies grace to endure.
NOTE
* If your marriage is struggling, do not give up.
* If wounds exist, seek healing.
* If love seems lost, let God revive it.
* What God joined, He can still strengthen.
PRAYER
Lord, restore the foundations of marriage in our homes.
Heal broken unions, soften hardened hearts, and teach us to love with covenant strength.
Let Your design prevail over human weakness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
