Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
The Primary Text
(Matt. 12:31-32 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. (vs. 32) Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”)
(Mark 3:28-30 “Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; (vs.29) but he who blasphemies against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation – (vs. 30) because they said, He has an unclean spirit.”)
(Luke 12:10 “And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemies against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.”)
These are the three foundational passages of Scripture on the doctrine of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
The Context: What was Happening?
In Matt. 12 and Mark 3:
Jesus healed a demon-possessed man
the Pharisees witnessed the miracle
Instead of acknowledging the Spirit's power they credited the miracle to Satan (Beelzebub).
Jesus warned them that this accusation was dangerously close to – and for some, already constituted – the unforgivable sin.
Key Point:
The religious leaders were not:
ignorant
mistaken
or uninformed
The saw the undeniable evidence of the Holy Spirit's power with full knowledge and deliberately rejected it, calling the Spirit's holy work “demonic”.
The Meaning of “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit”
The Greek word (blasphemia) means slander, vilifying, speaking evil with deliberate hostility.
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the willful, conscious, knowledgeable rejection of the Holy Spirit's testimony about Christ, attributing the Spirit's saving work to Satan, and thereby permanently hardening the heart against repentance.
Put simply:
It is a final, hardened, deliberate rejection of the Holy Spirit's witness to Jesus.
Why it cannot be Forgiven
Forgiveness comes only through the Spirit's drawing (Jn. 16:7-11 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to our advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. (vs. 8) And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (vs. 9) of sin, because they do not believe in Me; (vs. 10) of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; (vs. 11) of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”)
If a person knowingly rejects the Spirit's testimony and hardens themselves permanently, they place themselves beyond repentance, not because God is unwilling to forgive, but because they will not repent anymore.
Supporting Scriptures:
(Jn. 16:8 “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:”) - The Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment.
(Hebrews 6:4-6 “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, (vs. 5) and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, (vs. 6) if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.”)
(Hebrews 10:29 “of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
(Acts 7:51 “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.”)
Historic Biblical Fundamental Understanding
Most fundamental theologians (Spurgeon, J. R. Graves, John Gill, A.T. Robertson, ect.) define the sin as:
Not a careless word...
Not simply saying something foolish or irreverent.
Not backsliding...
Even serious sin can be forgiven when there is repentance.
Not doubting or fear...
Anxiety about committing the unforgivable sin is actually evidence that you have not committed it.
Rather:
A full, deliberate, malicious rejection of the Holy Spirit's clear testimony about Jesus with full understanding, to the point of permanent hardness of the heart.
How Fundamentalist Commonly Summarize It
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is:
1. A deliberate, continual rejection of the Spirit's witness to Christ
2. A willful attributing of God's work to Satan
3. A final hardness of the heart that refuses repentance
4. Therefore unforgivable, because the person will not ever repent
It is NOT:
A one-time sin
A moral failure
A spoken slip
A persistent temptation
or anything repented of
NOTE: Anyone who is worried they committed the unforgivable sin has not committed it! Concern, conviction, and fear show that the Holy Spirit is still working on the heart.
Summary:
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit = A decisive final rejection of the Holy Spirit's testimony about Jesus, even while fully knowing it is true, and calling the Spirit's work “evil”.
This sin:
Hardens the heart beyond repentance
Leaves no desire to seek forgiveness
Is therefore “unforgivable”, not because God refuses forgiveness, but because the sinner permanently rejects it.
