THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
Our Past Does Not Define Us

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life].”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (AMP)

Answering a prayer call in our pastoral ministries department, I was immediately caught up into a chaotic environment. I strained to hear the slurred words of the caller. As the background noise of young children fussing over a toy escalated, so did the volume of her voice. Her increased anxiety seemed to make her slurring worse.

What she tried to tell me was of critical importance to her. A product of an abusive past, she blurted out the multitude of serious issues she now combatted. Bless her heart, she viewed herself as having no value or future. She was an emotional mess.

“I feel I’m hanging on the edge of a cliff, and I don’t have strength to hold on. I’m damaged goods,” she slurred, trying to keep from sobbing. “I feel truly like a mental case. God help!”

“God help” were the words going through my mind at the exact same time. I didn’t know how to help her beyond this critical juncture—it was beyond human reasoning. The Holy Spirit lovingly prompted me to say, “Sister, let’s invite the Creator into this conversation.” We did, and I explained I would pray first, then invited her to pray in conclusion.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, God’s message flowed from my mouth. I knew her heart was being bathed by His comfort, and I secretly prayed His good seed was falling on fertile ground. “I love you, Jesus,” she whimpered. “I love you, Jesus.”

I punctuated my prayer with an “Amen!” and it was her turn to pray. Suddenly, unexpectedly, the background noise ceased; and in that still environment, her words were no longer slurred.

“Lord rescue me, deliver me from this dark place. Love me! Use me!” she prayed boldly. “Clean up this damaged heart of mine, restore my hope. Fill my heart with your love.”

When I commented on the beauty of her heartfelt words to our Creator, she timidly asked if God could make her whole and beautiful again. One step ahead of me, the Holy Spirit gave me the message she needed to hear.

“Your past does not have to define who you are. Allow Jesus to save you and the Holy Spirit to guide you, and see what doors God opens for you. He wants you to be a new creation in Him, and He says old things will pass away. God says you will be His workmanship—His work of art. A new life is available to you today. Love Him, and give Him permission to guide your life.”

That’s a message we all need to hear!
