Matthew 17:10-13 The disciples asked Him,

Question in the Bible

"Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

Answer in the Bible

He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things;

but I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but did to him as they wished.  The Son of Man is also going to suffer at their hands."

Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

Malachi 4:5-6 "Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD.

"He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers [a reconciliation produced by repentance], so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse [of complete destruction].

Matthew 11:11-15 "I assure you and most solemnly say to you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater [in privilege] than he.

"From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violent assault, and violent men seize it by force [as a precious prize].

"For all the prophets and the Law prophesied up until John.

"And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is [the fulfillment of] Elijah [as the messenger] who has to come [before the kingdom].

"He who has ears to hear, let him hear and heed My words.
