Psalm 119:49-96 Part 2 of 4 TLB

Philippians 1:3-11 All my prayers for you are full of praise to God!

When I pray for you, my heart is full of joy

because of all your wonderful help in making known the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.

And I am sure that God who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow in his grace until his task within you is finally finished on that day when Jesus Christ returns.

How natural it is that I should feel as I do about you, for you have a very special place in my heart. We have shared together the blessings of God, both when I was in prison and when I was out, defending the truth and telling others about Christ.

Only God knows how deep is my love and longing for you--with the tenderness of Jesus Christ.

My prayer for you is that you will overflow more and more with love for others, and at the same time keep on growing in spiritual knowledge and insight,

for I want you always to see clearly the difference between right and wrong, and to be inwardly clean, no one being able to criticize you from now until our Lord returns.

May you always be doing those good, kind things that show you are a child of God, for this will bring much praise and glory to the Lord.

Hebrews 12:7-11 Let God train you, for he is doing what any loving father does for his children. Whoever heard of a son who was never corrected?

If God doesn't punish you when you need it, as other fathers punish their sons, then it means that you aren't really God's son at all--that you don't really belong in his family.

Since we respect our fathers here on earth, though they punish us, should we not all the more cheerfully submit to God's training so that we can begin really to live?

Our earthly fathers trained us for a few brief years, doing the best for us that they knew how, but God's correction is always right and for our best good, that we may share his holiness.

Being punished isn't enjoyable while it is happening--it hurts! But afterwards we can see the result, a quiet growth in grace and character.

Psalm 39:1-13 I said to myself, I'm going to quit complaining! I'll keep quiet, especially when the ungodly are around me.

But as I stood there silently the turmoil within me grew to the bursting point,

The more I mused, the hotter the fires inside. Then at last I spoke and plead with God:

Lord, help me to realize how brief my time on earth will be. Help me to know that I am here for but a moment more.

My life is no longer than my hand! My whole lifetime is but a moment to you. Proud man! Frail as breath! A shadow!

And all his busy rushing ends in nothing. He heaps up riches for someone else to spend.

And so, Lord, my only hope is in you.

Save me from being overpowered by my sins, for even fools will mock me then.

Lord, I am speechless before you. I will not open my mouths to speak one word of complaint, for my punishment is from you.

Lord, don't hit me anymore--I am exhausted beneath you hand.

When you punish a man for his sins, he is destroyed, for he is as fragile as moth-infested cloth; yes, man is frail as breath.

Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my cry! Don't sit back, unmindful of my tears. For I am your guest, I am a traveler passing through the earth, as my fathers were.

Spare me, Lord! Let me recover and be filled with happiness again before my death.

Romans 10:9-13 For if you tell others with your own mouth that Jesus Christ is your Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

For it is by believing in his heart that a man becomes right with God; and with his mouth he tells others of his faith, confirming his salvation.

For the Scriptures tell us that no one who believes in Christ will ever be disappointed.

Jew and Gentiles are the same in this respect; they all have the same Lord who generously gives his riches to all those who ask him for them.

Anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
