Why Do We Celebrate Christmas?

First of all, there is no reason in the Bible not to celebrate Christmas. In fact, the Bible encourages us to celebrate special events:

When the Israelites left Egypt, God commanded them to observe a feast.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread was commanded after their quick departure from Egypt.

The Feast of Weeks was celebrated to rejoice over the harvest.

The Feast of Tabernacles was observed because the Israelites lived in tents.

New Year celebrations were commanded at the beginning of the year.

And after completing His creation, God commanded the Sabbath to be observed.

These examples show that celebrating an event to remember it is completely biblical. So if it was right for the Israelites, how can we not celebrate the greatest event in history—the coming of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, into this world?

Christmas reminds us that God Himself became human and came among us. This was the greatest event in human history, and it deserves joy and celebration. If we have no hesitation in celebrating small joys in life, why not celebrate the greatest joy of all?

Christmas also gives us the opportunity to share with the world about Jesus Christ and His miraculous birth. Just as the shepherds rejoiced, the angels rejoiced, and the wise men rejoiced, today we celebrate by remembering the birth of Jesus.

Yes, the Bible doesn’t specifically command celebrating Christmas, but it clearly commands us to be joyful, to fellowship, and to be thankful. We rejoice at the coming of Jesus, we enjoy fellowship with others, and we give thanks for what He has done for us.

For example, the Old Testament doesn’t command inviting people to weddings, yet Jesus participated in such celebrations with His disciples. Similarly, the New Testament doesn’t provide a checklist of celebrations but gives a principle: we can rejoice in everything that brings honor and glory to God and celebrate the events and blessings He has given us in our lives.

The greatest thing God did for us was the most amazing gift—He became human to make our salvation possible.
Let us all remember His incredible love and sacrifice and celebrate with joy, because that is the true purpose of Christmas!
