THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
Bonded.

“Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.” Jeremiah 24:7

My daughter loves connecting and bonding with people, especially family! Her delight is to have that close connection which brings the feeling of being desired, wanted, and loved. To experience that interaction which brings about a deep connection that goes way below the surface of casual relationships.

One day, while visiting their home, I sat at the kitchen table with her husband David, diligently working on a Sudoku puzzle together. I was in the elementary learning stages of this type of brain activity, whereas he was much more skilled at working these sorts of puzzles. As we poured over the squares in front of us, my son-in-law shared insights, advice, tips, and tricks about figuring out this challenge. Right then, my daughter walked by and said, “Oh, look. You are bonding over this puzzle.”

I chuckled inside, but upon deeper reflection, I agreed with her. The ultimate goal of working on the puzzle was not just to finish it successfully, as nice and wonderful as that was; but to form a connection, a link in our friendship as mother-in-law and son-in-law as we worked the puzzle together.

With even more contemplation about the “bonding” experience, I wonder what God thinks of our relationship with Him? Are we spending time with Him just for the surface relationship, or would we like to have a deeper connection, a bonding, if you will, of the human and divine minds? Is our goal to spend time with Him only to mark that duty “done” on our daily schedule?

What if that was my only goal in working the Sudoku puzzle with David? What if once the puzzle was satisfactorily finished, I walked away without becoming closer to him as a person?

No, it was much more than that. It was about savoring his patience with me, his love and care that I learn a new activity and do well at it, his unselfishness in spending time as we worked through the puzzle, laughing and enjoying our time together. This activity was not just a project. It was about a relationship, too.

How patient God is with us humans as we traverse this Earth. He desires nothing more than to breathe His life into us, to connect with us in a most intimate way, that our hearts beat as one, that we love the same things, that His love flow through us to others.

When we spend time with the Lord each day, our experience should leave us with not only an “Oh, those were great words from the Bible” moments, but a deeper love for our Savior, a bonding that nothing in this world can break. This comes by not only spending time with God, but letting Who God is sink deep within us, changing everything about us. That bond can become unbreakable and will continue throughout eternity. Bonded forever..
