“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
It’s barely past 2:00 a.m., and I am suddenly awake. Why? This isn’t a day I have to get up and prepare for work. Yet, I am wide awake—but not okay. My mind is filled with thoughts—issues and situations—and there is no rest. No peace.
I dwell on things coming up that I don’t know how to face. I think of the past, the same old hurts, struggles, and questions. I quietly rise; yes, I know where I must go. This has to stop, and it must stop today.
I step into the kitchen to peer out the back door into the darkness. I turn to the counter and glance at the flashing light coming from my phone—and my heart sinks. I’ve missed the call I expected 24 hours earlier. How long must I wait now to speak to that loved one? It feels as if one more stone has been thrown on top of me.
I make it to my destination—my prayer room—and I fall to my knees. I feel as if I am buried alive. I am hurting from the pressure of life’s stones. I am ready for it to end; to experience the relief and see the light shine through again. How did I get this way? Why am I fighting the same old demons? I want to get to the root of this and get this settled.
I cry out to my Father. It’s not easy at first; I don’t know where to start. There is no beginning or end. One by one I begin telling Him all my concerns. I weep as I tell Him how I just don’t know how to fix myself. I’m so messed up. I don’t understand myself.
He tells me it’s ok, because He does.
As the minutes turn into an hour, I feel the stones being lifted off of me. I can breathe again. Peace is coming. I rise from under the heaviness of my burdens and see the breaking of my night into day. “Thank you, Lord, for your mercy.”
My cares are still a reality, but the weight of them is gone. I know I can face today, and for that I’m thankful. In His strength, I won’t worry about tomorrow or what will happen in the future. My Father has that—and me—in His hands.
“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” Psalm 50 verse 15.
