I'm currently doing a bible study on the book of Joshua. I am using the passionate Life Bible study series by Brian Simmons. He has made a few statements that I think are pretty great. They are as follows, "No one is saved by their own righteous deeds or their shortage of unrighteous ones. We cannot impress god with our goodness or our lack of badness". And he uses the following scriptures to back these statements up. Romans 3:10 to 12, quote there is no one who always does what is right, no, not even one! There is no one with true spiritual insight, and there is no one who seeks after God alone. All have deliberately wandered from God's ways. All have become depraved and unfit." Then he gives us Ephesians chapter 2: 8-9, "For by Grace you have been saved by faith. Nothing you did could ever earn this salvation, or it was the love gift from God that brought us to Christ! So no one will ever be able to boast, for salvation is never a reward for good works or humans driving."
I think that's pretty clear.
