THE ADVENT TRUTH A lot of confusion comes from mixing tradition with truth. Let’s clean it up with Scripture. Here’s the Bible’s answer: Isaiah 33:14–15 says the wicked are afraid of everlasting burnings, but then asks, “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? … He that walketh righteously.” That’s right. The righteous live in the everlasting burnings, because those burnings are not hellfire—they are the presence of God Himself. “For our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29). So what people often call “eternal burning” is actually the eternal glory of God’s holiness. The righteous live there. The wicked can’t stand it. Revelation 20 shows the wicked do NOT burn now. They sleep in death until the end of the millennium. After the 1,000 years, they are resurrected (Revelation 20:5), stand before the judgment, and are destroyed by fire from heaven (Revelation 20:9, 14–15). That’s the second death—not eternal life in flames. So no, the wicked are not currently burning in some underworld. No, they won’t be tormented forever. And no, the righteous don’t “burn like the wicked.” Instead, they dwell eternally in the fire of God’s love and glory. Here’s the real question: Can your character stand in the unfiltered presence of a holy God? Or will sin consume you when His glory is revealed? False doctrine portrays God as a tyrant who tortures sinners forever. The Bible reveals a God who ends sin completely and restores peace forever. The righteous can dwell in everlasting burnings because they’ve let Jesus burn sin out of their lives. The wicked can’t, because they’ve held onto sin—and sin can’t survive God’s holy fire.
