Bearing the Weight of Sin
Scripture
Deuteronomy 21:22–23 (NKJV)
If a man has committed a sin deserving of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain overnight on the tree, but you shall surely bury him that day, so that you do not defile the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance; for he who is hanged is accursed of God.
From Curse to Redemption
Deuteronomy chapter 21 contains laws that reflect God’s concern for justice, dignity, and responsibility—even in difficult and uncomfortable situations. Verses 22–23 address punishment for serious sin, but they also reveal God’s care for holiness and the land He had given His people. Death was not to be treated casually, and the land was not to be defiled. Even judgment had boundaries.
This passage points powerfully forward to the work of Jesus Christ. Scripture later explains that Christ was hung on a tree and became a curse for us. What was once a symbol of judgment became, through Jesus, a symbol of redemption. He bore the curse we deserved so that we could receive forgiveness, life, and restoration.
For believers today, this verse reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the depth of Christ’s sacrifice. Sin brings death, but Jesus stepped into our place. He carried what we could not, so that we could walk free.
Reflection Questions
1. Do I fully recognize the cost of sin and the price Jesus paid for me?
2. How does Christ bearing my curse change how I live today?
3. Am I walking in gratitude and obedience in response to His sacrifice?
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for sending Jesus to bear the curse I could never carry. Thank You for the forgiveness and life You have given me through His sacrifice. Help me to live in gratitude, holiness, and obedience as a response to Your great love. In Jesus name, Amen.
